I am a flight simmer; not a really fanatical one but average. For sometime now I work with FlightsimulatorX (FSX) on Vista Home Premium. The PC I use is a Dell XPS 720 with 1 graphics card, NVIDIA GeForce 8800GTX (768 MB). The system has 4 GB of internal memory (DDR2 dual-channel 4 x 1024 MB). So much for this enumeration. The first thing to do is the installation of Windows 7. To do this I had to determine a good strategy. My initial plan was to buy a s.s.d. and install Windows 7 on that disk. This would possibly be the easiest strategy and it woul speed up Windows. That speed gain is mostly the loading of files. Choosing a re-installation is one thing, doing it the right way is something else. After all, what would happen to the Boot Manager that was installed when you installed Windows 7 the first time. I am afraid that if you do nothing and simply remove the partition from Vista you’ll probably create a second entry for Windows 7 in the bootloader screen after startup. In the previous post, I have already made clear, that FS-X de luxe edition’s compatibility with Windows 7 according to the Microsoft compatibility list is pending for the time being. But I believe that there are not such big differences between these versions that they would respond different in Windows 7 . So I decided to install my de luxe edition anyway; step by step. To begin with, I must say, that Windows 7 performs significantly better with FSX than Vista. I have extensively increased the settings for the display and the scenery; partly by settings in the nVidia Control Panel, partly by settings in FSX itself. Read more…
